Editorial:It’s Time to Stop Treating High School Thugs As Children

High school for many of us wasn’t the great time it appeared to be on TV shows like Happy Days.  There were always bullies who would degrade students.  Sometimes that student was you.

Bullies could affect how well you did in school and how you perceived yourself.  Incredibly, when high school was over they would seldom remember what they had done to you.

I would like everyone reading this editorial to close their eyes and try to imagine how the two Wilson junior varsity baseball team boys felt when, in the dark of night, on a full school bus returning from a game, three other baseball players, upper classmen, decided to rape them. That is what happened to them on April 17th. This story came to life on March  24th when one of the parents reported the incident.

There were adults and coaches on the bus who were supposed to serve as chaperones, but none heard their cries of pain and anguish.   The three upper classmen used the youngers boys back ends for their own enjoyment.  One can only imagine how they screamed in pain for mercy.  Those bullies raped not only their bodies but their minds as well.  As we know from the Catholic chruch abuse cases, this kind of cruelty has a long lasting effect on ones life.

These monsters enjoyed the rush of power, of treating their victims as swine who should have enjoyed the attention of the upperclassmen; the heroes of the school.  They cared nothing about destroying the dignity of the two boys.  They intended to brag about their prowess and how these “babies” cried and screamed like they didn’t love it.

The three Varsity players had no intention of keeping their actions a secret.  It is common knowledge among the students at Wilson High School that it is tradition to ”haze” the younger children.  This might be the first time they crossed the line into sexual assualt.

Please pray that these children will be able to live a normal life and that those responsible for this carnal savage act pay a high price for their part in this act of disgust and degridation.

Bullies are a real problem in school. What I never understood was why teachers didn’t come down much harder on these thugs. Adults in the school must be taught how serious problem can develope frombeing hounded by bullies. It not the bully who goes in a school with a gun to kill but the children who being the target of the school punks.

So often those who been torture and brutalizes are forgoten as th case becomes old news. This must not happen in this case. Each parent should put their child in place of those children on that bus and hear their screams of deep pain.
