Bill Will Reduce Dependence on Foreign Oil & Save American Consumers Billions

Washington, D.C.- Today Congressman Higgins (NY-27) voted to pass the Energy Security Act, historic and sweeping legislation to increase American energy independence, strengthen national security, lower energy costs, create new jobs, and reduce global warming.

“I applaud the passage of this landmark legislation that will put America on the path towards energy independence,” Congressman Higgins said. “As the price of gas in New York State has soared to $3.28 per gallon- a 130% increase since 2001- this bill could not come at a more critical time.”

The Energy Independence and Security Act will increase vehicle fuel efficiency to 35 miles per gallon in 2020—the first congressional increase in 32 years – and slash U.S. oil consumption by more than 4 million barrels per day by 2030.This is the first increase in a generation and is supported by environmentalists, labor groups and the automobile industry.

The legislation also expands the use of American-grown biofuels to 36 billion gallons in 2022 increases the efficiency of buildings, homes, appliances, and lighting. All totaled it cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 by up to 24 percent.

The legislation will save money for American consumers and strengthen the economy. Increased vehicle fuel efficiency is expected to save American families $700 to $1,000 a year at the pump and the new building, appliance, and lighting efficiency will save consumers $400 billion through 2030. Additionally, the development of biofuels and support for cutting-edge energy research will create hundreds of thousands of new jobs. In New York State alone this legislation could create 8,200 jobs and save families $894 million at the pump in 2020.

The Senate passed the bill on December 13 by a vote of 86 to 8. House passage of the bill sends it to the President’s desk. The White House has indicated that the President will sign the bill.

IF THE NEW TOWN BOARD IS GOING TO CLICK MOHAN MUST CHANGE HIS WAYS

Many of us have listened to Supervisor Mohan describe how the internal problems of the Amherst town government over the past two years, since he has been the Town Supervisor, have been caused by our Town Board. Mohan has stated the Board is made up of people who have committed criminal acts against the citizens of Amherst.

The Supervisor has made it clear that the Town Comptroller, Town Attorney, Planning Director, and the Pepsi Center management staff are all working against him. He blames the Engineering Department for being unable to the jobs needing to be done which are the Engineering Department’s responsibility.

Supervisor Mohan is fair in his spreading the SNAFU’S of the town over all the departments. He has said he would like to replace all of these people.

Our Supervisor, as a teacher, must look more deeply into the chaos of the Town Departments. He must accept his part in the confusion of lies and more lies which is the basis for this confusion. If Mohan plans to get our town moving along at a progressive pace he must accept his responsibility as the CEO.

SUPERVISOR MOHAN STATED HE WOULD WORK FOR A DOLLAR A YEAR, THAT WAS BEFORE HE BECAME A POLITICAN

THE TOWN SUPERVISOR STATED HE WOULD WORK FOR A DOLLAR A YEAR. THAT WAS BEFORE HE BECAME A POLITICAN. NOW IT’S $100,000 A YEAR.

Amherst Supervisor Mohan is looking for a raise for himself and the other elected officials of Amherst. He has stated that for the amount of work he does he is very much underpaid.

Mohan has to form a committee to investigate the pay schedules of cities with a population size similar to Amherst, which is about 116,800 people, to get an accurate range how much these elected officials receive, including their benefits and perks.

When this committee has finished their research they will present their information to the Town Board. At that point the Board will discuss the matter and vote either to reject or accept a raise.

Wonder how it will turn out.

STEROID REPORT CITES ‘COLLECTIVE FAILURE’

Sad to say, but the use of performance-enhancing drugs has tainted the likes of dozens of baseball stars, including seven M.V.P.’s.

“Former Senator George J. Mitchell released a blistering report Thursday that tied 89 Major League Baseball players, including Roger Clemens, to the use of illegal, performance-enhancing drugs. The report used informant testimony and supporting documents to provide a richly detailed portrait of what Mr. Mitchell described as “baseball’s steroids era.””

“Mr. Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, was the most prominent name on a list that included seven other former most valuable players as well as players from all 30 teams. The list included more than a dozen players who have had significant roles with the Yankees, and more than a dozen Mets, too. It also included 11 players alone from the 2000 Los Angeles Dodgers.”

IN NEW ORLEANS, PLAN TO RAZE LOW-INCOME HOUSING DRAWS PROTEST

2 years after Katrina hit New Orleans has a changing city skyline, and not by the desires of the people who were displaced. The original population of the storm-damaged public housing projects were poor, mostly female, and almost entirely black.

‘Some protesters and activists accused the government of a darker motive behind the public housing demolition plan. They contended that the government’s real aim was to keep the poor, mostly female, almost entirely black residents of public housing from returning to their city, to their homes.”

A NEW BREED OF BILLIONAIRE

null
There’s a new game in town, or at least a new breed of billionaire in once-destitute countries.
The global wealth boom has created them and a number of them are using their wealth to push for social changes. They see a need and are ready, willing and able to step up and put their wealth to good use!

“The global wealth boom has created a new breed of billionaire in once-destitute countries like Turkey, India, Mexico and Russia. Propelled by their rising economies, robust currencies and globally competitive companies, they have ridden a surge in local stock markets that have reached previously untouchable heights in a short five-year timeframe. Now, a number of them are using their wealth to bolster their standing and push for social changes.”

HIGGINS VOTES TO EXTEND AND IMPROVE NATIONAL “DO NOT CALL” REGISTRY

higgins1.jpg
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) joined his colleagues in the House of Representatives to approve two pieces of legislation which will improve and maintain the National “Do Not Call” Registry.

“This legislation gives hard-working Western New Yorkers the freedom to sit down to dinner with their families without unwanted solicitations by telemarketers,” said Congressman Higgins. “Actions by Congress this week will extend this popular program for another five years and remove the burdensome re-enrollment requirement.”

First enacted in 2003, the “Do-Not-Call” Implementation Act established a registry which allows consumers to limit the telemarketing calls they receive. The registry is managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and enforced by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The “Do Not Call” Registry Fee extension act of 2007 (H.R.2601) extends the registry, set to expire this year, through 2012 and allows for the collection of fees from telemarketers to help pay for maintenance of the registry.

The “Do Not Call” Improvement Act (H.R. 3541), which Congressman Higgins co-sponsored, prohibits the FTC from automatically removing numbers from the registry because of predetermined time limitations. Under the original bill residents are required to re-register their numbers after five years.

To register your home or mobile phone on the National “Do Not Call” Registry go to www.donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222.

MARINELLI APPOINTED TO YET ANOTHER COMMITTEE

null
According to an article in the Buffalo News Erie County Legislature Chairwoman Lynn Marinelli, D-Town of Tonawanda, has been appointed to the State Association of Counties’ Economic Development, Environmental and Rural Affairs Committee.

She also serves on the Erie County Industrial Development Agency and the Buffalo and Erie County Workforce Investment Board.

That’s wonderful, but it would be better if she would actually attend the meetings and SERVE on the committees she’s on. Simply being ON a committee isn’t enough.
