Congressman Higgins to Announce New Bill to Provide Grants for Veteran Treatment Courts

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) will be joined by Acting Erie County Court Judge Robert Russell to announce new federal legislation that would provide federal assistance to Veteran Treatment Court programs like Judge Russell’s in Buffalo, New York.

What:              After noticing an increasing number of veterans coming through the court system, in January of this year Judge Russell established the first veteran’s treatment court in the nation.  The program in Buffalo, New York, is modeled after the existing mental health and drug court system which provides a strong emphasis on rehabilitation for non-violent offenders.  Congressman Higgins is an original cosponsor on a bill that would provide grants to establish and maintain veteran treatment court programs across the nation.             Where:            Buffalo Veteran’s Court
