Am I The Only One Who Noticed?

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Mike Ranzenhjofer, Republican candidate for NYS Senate in the 61st District, is becoming a regular fixture on local TV. He’s got the money for the media buys, and is therefore excused from media scrutiny.Good ol’ Mike is campaigning against inaction in Albany. Nothing gets done. He’s going to go there and get things done. He’s going to fight the do nothing attitude in the state capitol. He’ll bring us jobs. He’ll do what none of his fellow Republicans have been able to do. He be effective, a leader, a fighter.

He’ll do what Mary Lou Rath, the current Republican state senator for 14 years, was unable or unwilling to do…get something done. No sense going through the list of all the previous ineffectve Republican predecessors. All you need to know is that the State Senate has been controlled by Ranzenhofer’s Republican Party for the last 75 years. Electing him won’t correct what amounts to a Republican institutional problem.

Yet, you’d thinking someone would bring it to Ranzenhofer’s attention: “Hey Mike. The problems you address are problems that have not and most likely will not be addressed by your party which has been in the majority for the last 75 years. Why would a voter want to send another Republican to deal with problems caused by other Republicans?

Natural History of Gray Foxes

Gray foxes are primarily nocturnal and hunt small mammals. Sometimes, they hunt by day. They are the only canines that can climb trees. They seek refuge in trees and also climb to find food. The bark of the gray fox sounds like a hoarse cough. If you startle a fox, it may bark at you.Foxes are omnivorous. They eat small mammals, birds, insects, eggs, fruit, nuts, grains, and even human garbage. Rabbits are a preferred prey animal. In campgrounds, you might see them at night, picking through fire rings in search of morsels from campers’ meals. They are frequently seen crossing roads at night. In towns, they often eat pet food.

Foxes den in rock piles or hollow logs. About five young are born in spring. Both parents care for the young and teach them how to hunt.

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

The attacker was a rabid gray fox.  They can carry more diseases than just rabies.

Gray fox are able to resist mange. A more important disease of grays is distemper, which is oftentimes, fatal.  This disease can decimate gray fox populations whenever there is opportunity for contact between individual animals. Gray fox are also susceptible to parvo enteritis, rabies, roundworms, tapeworms, lice and mites.

Some of the worst enemies of gray fox are dogs.  Significant numbers of grays, particularly juveniles, are killed by dogs before they escape to a hole or are able to climb a tree for safety. Mountain lions kill grays as do golden eagles. Coyotes are also serious predators whenever the two species share the same habitat. The Gray fox can climb trees.
