Not long ago Amherst‘s Comptroller “discovered” over $850,000 in the 2007 budget earmarked for four school districts: Amherst; Sweet Home; Williamsville; and Eggertsville.
Today, 06/09/08 at the Monday afternoon Town Board work session, our Town Auditor informed everyone that this money was actually discovered between1994 -1996. He said the previous Comptrollers, Town Attorneys and Supervisors had known about it since 1996. When asked why the money wasn’t given to the schools at that time he answered, he didn’t know.
The Town of Amherst leaders, including former Supervisors, had full knowledge of the money but kept it secret for thirteen years.
So, there wasn’t any major money discovery made by our current Comptroller. What has been uncovered was a poorly designed scheme, a lie, by Supervisor Mohan to make his choice for Comptroller appear to be a hero.
Why is this the concern of the day? Some people should be taken down for the act of theft from the schools. Dr. Mohan is guilty of knowing about this money for over two years while he did nothing. He was responsible for ensuring its distribution to the school districts involved.
