Editorial: It’s The Town’s Duty To Begin Fixing Our Golf Courses Now

March 2, 2008 9:30 pm

To begin with let me say I‘m not a golfer.  Even so, I strongly feel our municipal golf courses must be brought up to grade to match up with other the local golf courses.  Yes, it will cost roughly $3.8 million to get them in top shape but all the work would not have to be done in one year.

There is much speculation the Town may sell this property off, or let a company come in and operate the golf course privately because of our cash flow problems.  The Town Board’s hesitation to begin improvements over the last 4 years has really put our golf course in the hole. There are dire needs which must be met and a decent drainage system is at the top of the list.

The residents who use our golf course must join together to put pressure on the Town Board not to farm out, or sell our, golf courses but to start fixing them.

Amherst must keep what we own.  When a town begins to sell off pieces of their land it becomes easier to sell the next parcel and then the next.
