EDITORIAL: MOHAN’S NEW MATH

Friday, January 4th, 2008

Supervisor Mohan has a resolution for the January 7th Town Board meeting which he believes is going to save the Town $125,000 dollars.  It is as follows :

“WHEREAS, the 2008 Budget includes the recruitment of a Superintendent, and  WHEREAS, the County, in their letter attached, has offered to transfer one of their Superintendents for a one-year trial period, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED that the Supervisor initiate the process to select a qualified person for the job of Plant Superintendent from the County pool and define his job description.”

The Supervisor has made it clear if the Town Board votes for this resolution Amherst will save $125,000 in one year.  Mohan’s way of doing math usually ends up with the town paying a good deal more, or less, than he says.

The following costs are the numbers he is working with to save our town $125,000 dollars. The Supervisor will choose a Superintendent for our Waste Water Treatment Plant from the pool of workers from those Erie County will offer us.  This person will run the plant at a cost of $50,000 a year.  It would cost the Town $65,000 to hire a regular Superintendent for our plant.  This is a saving of $15,000 if we hire one the County’s choices. This is the entire saving from this resolution.

At present we have two Asst. Supertendents running Plant 16. Their salary combined is over $155,000 dollars without benefits.  Dr. Mohan‘s math comes out with saving $125,000 using the figures in the above paragraphs.

These are the figures he is working with: $50,000 dollars to hire one of the Erie County Superintendent to run the  Amherst Waste Water Treatment Plant, also known as Plant 16. He will be keeping the two Asst. Superintendents at the plant presently, which cost over $155,000 dollars.

No matter what type of miracle math Mohan uses it is hard to convince the public how saving of $15,000 dollars is really saving $125,000.dollars.  Will any of the Republican Group of Four on our new Town Board: Mohan, Weinstein, Marlette, or Schratz, be able to explain this money magic trick to the citizens of Amherst and how Mohan’s Miracle Math works?  I’d like to use it to figure my taxes if it’s legal.  Mohan wouldn’t use it if it wasn’t legal, right?
